Common Signs Of Battery Problems

Dashboard warning symbol

One of the most obvious signs that you have a battery problem is your battery symbol lighting up on your dashboard. The cause of this could be a loose starter terminal, damaged cabling or a failing alternator. If the light stays on once you start driving, it’s likely there’s a problem with your alternator belt – this part is responsible for charging your car’s battery whilst on the move. If you’ve got a battery warning light on give us a visit at the earliest available opportunity to reduce the risk of your car breaking down.

Difficulty getting your car started

If you’ve got a problem car battery, you’ll notice that your engine cranks more slowly than usual and your car takes longer to start. You may notice this perhaps a couple of times at most before your battery completely fails, so be sure not to ignore it!

The most obvious sign that your battery has failed is when you hear a clicking sound when trying to start your car. This sound is the result of your battery not having enough power to crank the engine. You may be able to jump-start your battery to temporarily resolve this issue and then give us a visit to get a replacement battery fitted as soon as possible.

Low / loss of electrical power

Your car battery is responsible for powering the electrics within your vehicle including such features as electric windows, lights and your heating/cooling system such as your car’s air-conditioning. Car battery problems are more prevalent in winter when temperatures drop, the nights draw in and you need to use your heating system, heated windows and lights more often.

You may also notice that your headlights are not shining quite so bright or that they flicker, which is another sign of a weak battery that is on its way out.
