Salvage Vehicle Categories

In October 2017, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) updated its Code of Practice - a voluntary code setting out rules and guidelines which dictate how the UK salvage industry works. This decision was made to reflect the evolving technology and materials used in new vehicle manufacture and importantly make categories more transparent for salvage buyers. Categories A and B remain with Category N and Category S having been introduced to replace Categories C and D. See below for more information.

Category A

Category A

A Cat A car is for scrap only. Category A vehicles are so badly damaged they should be crushed and never re-appear on the road. Even salvageable parts must be destroyed.

Think a burn out, a vehicle that's been rolled, or a vehicle which has been submerged in flood waters

.

Category B

Category B

A Cat B vehicle is one which has been badly damaged but can be broken up (dismantled) for parts, after which the bodyshell must be crushed.

Category B vehicles must never be returned to the road.

Category S

Category S

Cat S means the vehicle has suffered structural damage. This could include a bent or twisted chassis, damage to the structural frame, or a crumple zone that has collapsed in a crash.

A Category S vehicle can be repaired and put back onto the road, but the insurance company has decided not to do this.  This could be for a number of reasons including non-availability of parts, or the length of time the repair could take, or due to the owner's preference to have the vehicle written off.

The damage is more than just cosmetic, therefore, and the vehicle will need to be professionally repaired.

Category N

Category N

A Category N vehicle can be repaired and put back onto the road, but the insurance company has decided not to do this.  This could be for a number of reasons including non-availability of parts, or the complexity of the repair (for example, an electrical issue), the length of time the repair could take, or due to the owner's preference to have the vehicle written off.

Even though there is no structural damage, the vehicle may still need work on safety critical parts, such as steering, brakes and suspension, so buyers should be aware of any potential repairs requiring to be carried out.
